| This full
day caving and abseiling session is full
of adventure and excitement. Caving usually
comes first. You will be kitted up in a special caving
oversuit and equipped with a helmet, light and caver's
belt. Wellington boots complete the outfit which we
can also supply for you. After a briefing from your
instructor you will set off on the short walk to Goatchurch
Cavern.
Adventurous groups may prefer
to visit the wet and spectacular Swildon's Hole
The caving trip will start
gently with walking size passages where you will see
cave formations and maybe a sleeping bat. As your confidence
grows the instructor will gradually introduce you to more
challenging routes involving crawls, slides and scrambles.
You will see spacious chambers and strange rock formations
in secret world of the underground.
After a lunch break it's time to
experience the thrill of abseiling. You will be
equipped in a climbing harness and helmet before being
instructed in the technique of controlling your own
descent. It's an adrenaline charged experience leaning
back over the cliff-top but your instructor will talk you
through while holding you securely on the safety rope.
There are two possible abseil
venues:
Burrington Combe is the ideal
venue for most beginners groups. The cliffs are inclined
slabs up to 15 metres which are not too intimidating for
younger children.
Split Rock near Wells is
our preferred abseiling site for adult groups
and more adventurous youngsters. The cliffs are
vertical and up to 25 metres high. The abseils
are long enough to allow a 'bouncing' descent in true SAS
style!
Timings - we usually meet at
10.00, have lunch from 12.45 to 13.30 If we
decide to go to Split Rock there will be a half hour drive
and the afternoon session will start at about 14.00.
